Coral Pop Granny Square Pattern

Colorful crochet motif and granny square texture for a bright crochet pattern site

Project label: Free crochet pattern / beginner-friendly color play.

Make this square when you want a project that looks energetic without becoming complicated. The design uses a small coral center, teal corner structure, butter yellow rounds, and a deep navy final outline. It works as a coaster, bunting block, tote-panel sample, or first square in a blanket plan. The square is written in joined rounds so the corners stay crisp and the color changes are easy to control.

Materials

  • Worsted cotton yarn in coral, teal, butter yellow, white, and a little deep navy
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook, or size needed for a flat square
  • Yarn needle, scissors, blocking pins
  • Optional: stitch marker for the first corner

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • sp = space
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches

Gauge and size

With worsted cotton and a 4.5 mm hook, the square measures about 6 inches after light blocking. Gauge is less important than a flat fabric; change hook size if the corners cup or wave.

Instructions

  1. With coral, ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 3, work 11 dc into the ring, join to the top of ch 3. Count: 12 dc.
  2. Join white. Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join. Count: 24 dc.
  3. Join butter yellow. Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st for corner, dc in next 5 sts; repeat from * three more times, adjusting the last side so each side has 7 dc between corners, join.
  4. Join teal. Ch 3, dc in each dc across to corner, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each corner ch-2 sp, repeat around, join. Count: 11 dc per side between corners.
  5. Work one more dc round in butter yellow in the same way. Count: 15 dc per side between corners.
  6. Join deep navy. Ch 1, sc in each dc and work 3 sc in each corner space, join and fasten off.

Finishing and color notes

Block the square to sharpen the edges. Keep the navy round thin; it should frame the color rather than overpower it.

For a blanket, repeat the same palette in different orders so the squares look coordinated but not identical.
