Project label: Free crochet pattern / beginner-friendly color play.
This coaster is a small, low-pressure way to test a bright palette before using it in a larger crochet project. The fabric is worked in rows of single crochet for firmness, with clean color blocks and a polished edging round. Because the shape is simple, the color placement becomes the design feature.
Materials
- Worsted cotton yarn in coral, teal, butter yellow, white, and deep navy
- 4 mm hook for a firm coaster
- Yarn needle, scissors
- Blocking mat or towel
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
Gauge and size
Finished coaster is about 4.25 inches square. Aim for 18 sc and 20 rows to measure 4 inches before the border; exact size can vary slightly.
Instructions
- With coral, ch 19. Row 1: sc in the second ch from hook and each ch across. Count: 18 sc.
- Rows 2-5: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Change to white at the end of Row 5.
- Rows 6-10: work 5 rows in white. Change to teal at the end of Row 10.
- Rows 11-15: work 5 rows in teal. Change to butter yellow at the end of Row 15.
- Rows 16-20: work 5 rows in butter yellow. Do not fasten off.
- Border round: ch 1, sc evenly around all four sides, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join to first sc.
- Join deep navy and work one final sl st round loosely around the edge. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing and color notes
For straighter side edges, place one border sc into the end of each row. If your edges pull in, add an extra sc halfway down each side.
Make four coasters with the color order rotated so the set feels designed but not identical.
