Rainbow Crochet Bookmark Pattern

Bright colorful yarn skeins for crochet patterns and color planning

Project label: Free crochet pattern / beginner-friendly color play.

This bookmark uses small amounts of yarn and is ideal for practicing tidy color changes. The narrow shape makes it quick, but the border and tassel give it a finished giftable look. Use cotton thread for a delicate book-safe marker or DK cotton for a bolder planner bookmark.

Materials

  • Sport or DK cotton in 4 to 6 colors
  • 3 mm hook for sport yarn or 3.5 mm hook for DK
  • Yarn needle, scissors
  • Optional: extra strands for tassel

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches

Gauge and size

Finished size is about 1.5 inches wide and 7 inches long in DK cotton. A firm gauge helps it stay flat inside a book.

Instructions

  1. Ch 9. Row 1: sc in second ch from hook and each ch across. Count: 8 sc.
  2. Rows 2-4: ch 1, turn, sc across in color A.
  3. Change to color B and work 4 rows. Continue changing color every 4 rows until the bookmark is about 6.5 inches long.
  4. Work one more row in your first color to visually tie the ends together.
  5. Border: ch 1, sc evenly around the rectangle, placing 3 sc in each corner. Join with a sl st.
  6. Optional tassel: cut six 8-inch strands, fold through one short end, pull tails through the loop, and trim evenly.

Finishing and color notes

Carry unused yarn only if the stripe is very narrow. For this design, fastening off each color gives cleaner edges.

Steam lightly from above or block flat under a towel; do not press synthetic yarn directly with a hot iron.

This is an original practical pattern draft for crocheters to make, adapt, and swatch. Check your own gauge, yarn label, and finished measurements before making multiples.
