Simple Five-Petal Crochet Flower Motif

Handmade crochet flowers arranged as a colorful floral crochet project

Project label: Free crochet pattern / beginner-friendly color play.

This small flower is designed for accessories, garlands, bookmarks, gift tags, and granny square corners. It has a firm center and five rounded petals, so it keeps its shape when sewn onto a project. Use smooth cotton if you want crisp petals or a soft acrylic blend for a puffier, playful look.

Materials

  • DK cotton yarn in butter yellow for the center and coral, teal, pink, or white for petals
  • 3.5 mm hook
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Optional small safety pin for marking the right side

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet
  • sp = space

Gauge and size

Finished flower is about 2.25 inches wide in DK cotton. The motif should lie flat with petals touching but not curling.

Instructions

  1. With yellow, ch 4 and join into a ring. Ch 1, work 10 sc into the ring, join to first sc. Count: 10 sc.
  2. Join petal color in any sc. Ch 2, dc and tr in same st, tr and dc in next st, ch 2, sl st in same st to complete one petal.
  3. Repeat the petal sequence across each pair of center stitches until you have 5 petals total.
  4. After the fifth petal, sl st at the base of the first petal and fasten off.
  5. Weave in ends on the wrong side. Use the starting tail to tighten the center ring if needed.
  6. To sew it down, catch only the back loops of the petal stitches so the front remains raised.

Finishing and color notes

Make a set in one palette for a polished look: coral petals with yellow centers, teal petals with white centers, and butter yellow petals with navy centers.

For a garland, leave long tails on two opposite petals and tie them around a chain cord instead of sewing.
